If you read the umbrella rant and were looking for a way to redeem yourself, this may be it. Out of the Rain is a collaborative art project that wants to bring attention to the issue of homelessness. Art, including artistically designed umbrellas will be displayed at the Roundhouse through November 8 - 17th, culminating in a Gala evening and silent auction. There will also be ongoing public forums for the duration of the exhibit at the Roundhouse, "A Liveable City for Everyone" that will address homelessness in Vancouver.
What a way to stay dry and feel good about it! The proceeds from the Gala evening and silent auction will go to benefit "organizations that work with individuals therapeutically through the arts, to address a multitude of underlying issues that are at the root cause of homelessness". It seems a bit strange to me that the proceeds are not going to help the homeless directly, but I guess that's what happens when you put the exhibit in the heart of Yaletown, miles away theoretically and logistically) from most homeless people. They do, however, provide some staggering statistics about the homeless on their site. Perhaps someone should write those on umbrellas and hand them out for free to the homeless. Art, advocacy, advertising and aid effectively combined.
